Soil health is at the core of our work at The Land Gardeners. Astonishingly there are more microbes in a teaspoon of soil than there are people in the world. Just as caring for the gut microflora in our intestines is crucial to human health so caring for microbes in our soil is crucial to soil health, and thus ultimately plant, animal and human health. Moreover the microbes in our soil can play an important role in climate change helping to “sequester” carbon from the atmosphere as well as increasing the water holding capacity of the soil.

Thankfully there are many ways that we can improve our soil quality on our farms and in our gardens (reduced tilling/no dig, crop rotations, introducing green manures, no pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers). At The Land Gardeners we believe the foundation for soil heath means nurturing the microbes in the soil through aerobic composting. We have joined forces with Innovative Farmers and are carrying out trials with gardeners and farmers around the world testing the controlled aerobic composting method in various climates.
